New generation of embedded computer systems for EMUs
We have developed and delivered vital electronic equipment for 21 EMUs (Electric Multiple Units). KONČAR – Electric Vehicles (KEV) is responsible for delivering trains to the end customer HŽ Passenger Transport. The train control systems include the main train computer, measurement and safety devices, control room computer, energy measurement system, human-machine interface, and communication network for inter-train connectivity.

Most of the equipment for this train series is based on the emerging proprietary KonECS hardware and software platform that enables configuration of industrial embedded computer systems (ECS) of various purposes. KonECS (Končar Embedded Computer Systems) platform represents a culmination of decades of development activities carried out at the Institute. The platform offers a series of new communication and computer capabilities, while maintaining all functionalities from the earlier versions.
The core hardware components of the platform include the main processor module, power supply module, and input-output processing modules. The main processor module features a multi-core TI AM5728 processor and supports two Ethernet and three serial communication interfaces, enabling the implementation of various protocols.
One challenge in transitioning from older platform-based URS devices to the new KonECS platform was migrating existing application programs. To address this, we developed the Grap Application Converter tool, which automatically translates application programs from previous generations into the new environment according to defined rules. This process highlighted the seamless collaboration between the KEV and Institute teams, with initial testing successfully completed to the satisfaction of both parties.
