SafeTram – prototype system test drive
As part of the SafeTram project, aimed at enhancing the safety of urban rail transport, a test drive of the prototype system was conducted on KONČAR TMK2200 electric tram.
As part of the SafeTram project, aimed at enhancing the safety of urban rail transport, a test drive of the prototype system was conducted on KONČAR TMK2200 electric tram. The purpose of the test drive was to evaluate and verify the selected combination of sensors and collision detection algorithms under real-world conditions.
The SafeTram system is designed to detect vehicles and pedestrians near the tram and alert the driver to potential hazards using both visual and auditory signals.
With a response time ten times faster than the average human reaction, the SafeTram system assists drivers in avoiding collisions, thereby reducing tram accidents and increasing overall tram traffic safety. To ensure accurate sensor placement, prototype mounts were created to closely match their intended real-world positions on the tram. Testing in real-world conditions and various everyday traffic scenarios in Zagreb will further enhance the system's capabilities. More test drives are planned in the upcoming period.
The development of the SafeTram system is a collaborative effort with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing at the University of Zagreb, supported by co-financing from the European Regional Development Fund.
