Expansion of high-voltage equipment qualification testing

The High-Power Laboratory for Large Systems and Drives (LAVESP) has successfully carried out testing of a 550 kV DC cable for a German customer, leveraging newly acquired equipment and expanded testing capabilities.

Expansion of high-voltage equipment qualification testing

The qualification tests conducted were part of an expanded EQ program, adhering to IEC 62895:2017, Cigre TB 852, and the specific requirements of the customer. The test object, a cable system comprising a 3000 mm² conductor, cable termination, and two joints, necessitated a month-long preparation period beginning in August 2023 due to its complexity. The testing phase began in September 2023 and was completed in February 2024, concluding with a final visual inspection post-disassembly of the test setup. Moreover, the project featured testing for superimposed overvoltages (both atmospheric and switching) on DC voltage, establishing LAVESP as one of the few global laboratories capable of performing such advanced tests.

This successful completion not only enhances our capabilities in cable testing but also positions our Laboratory Center among the elite high-voltage testing facilities worldwide.
