SafeTram: Enhancing safety in public urban rail transport

SafeTram

The SafeTRAM project is focused on developing an advanced system to boost the safety of urban rail transport. This innovative system is designed to incorporate multiple safety features aimed at significantly reducing accidents that cause extensive property damage and human casualties.

Electric trams are remarkably energy-efficient, consuming up to five times less energy than automobiles, and they do not contribute to environmental pollution. This makes them an ecologically superior option compared to road traffic, which accounts for 95% of all traffic-related emissions.

Looking ahead, systems like SafeTRAM will be essential for the operation of autonomous vehicles, supporting the modern vision of a safer and more sustainable urban transit network.

General objective: To increase the innovation and export potential of the Croatian economy in the rail transport sector.

Specific objectives:

  • Develop the SafeTRAM system to enhance the safety of public urban rail transport.
  • Improve competencies in the field of autonomous trams through collaboration with the research community.

Expected results:

  • Increase in sales revenue of the innovative SafeTRAM product
  • Successful protection of new technical solutions related to the implementation of safety aspects in tram-driver assistance systems
  • Publication of at least three scientific papers in the field of autonomous vehicles
  • Enhanced collaboration between the Institute and the academic community
